January 1st of 2012: Strong earthquake hits Japan

(Reuters) - A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 jolted eastern and northeastern Japan on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages and no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake measured 4 in central Tokyo, Fukushima and their surrounding areas on the Japanese intensity scale, which measures ground motion, according to Japan Meteorological Agency, which uses a different measuring system than the U.S. Geological Survey.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power said there were no reports of any abnormalities at the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plan following the quake.

Some high-speed train services in northern Japan were suspended after the earthquake, but soon resumed operations, Kyodo news reported.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake, at a depth of nearly 217 miles, was recorded off Japan's southeastern Izu islands on Sunday at 0527 GMT, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Hawaii-based U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake located south-southwest of Hachijo-jima in the Izu islands.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

On March 11, 2011, the northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake, the strongest quake in Japan on record, and a massive tsunami, which triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since Chernobyl.

The disaster left up to 23,000 dead or missing.

The Best SKA Band in Town!

STOLENSHOTS, a SKA band that comes from the small town of Legazpi City, province of Albay.
The band was originally formed on 2003 by one of the members of the band, Payirl, who at that time wanted to set a band just to join the band fest.

But because the members of the band had one thing in common, being a music lover and inspired by the music of the renown SKA bands, they decided to continue what they had started, from that the name stolenshots was established.

On June 2008, stolenshots is featured in the MUSIKMAX BICOL Cd compilation album under Rebolusyon Rekords where they share three groovy and skankin’ original song compositions, “Movin’ to the Top” “Chocolate Brown Coffee” and the anthemic “Rudies Cry”.  That year they were also featured on another Bicolano cd compilation album entitled RIBOK by Club Molotov, where their original song “All the while (I thought)” was the carrier single of the said compilation album.

They also participated on different gigs in Manila such as "Sweet and Dandy", "2nd Manila Ska Fest", and "Sarung Banggi".

The band dreams to build a SKA seal and scene not only on their hometown, but as well as throughout Bicol Region, and express the SKA beat on their own way.

 Be updated on their gigs:

Stolenshots still skankin' since 2003! Support your local scene.

Italian chocolate boss Pietro Ferrero dies in bike accident

MILAN, Italy - Italian chocolate tycoon Pietro Ferrero, joint chief executive of the group that owns Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, has died in a biking accident in South Africa, a company spokesman said Monday.

Ferrero, who was 47, fell from his bicycle during a regular riding session, probably because he was taken ill, while on a business trip in South Africa, the spokesman told AFP, voicing the group's "deep dismay."

Ferrero had co-run the sweets company with his younger brother Giovanni since 1997.

Their 85-year-old father Michele, who turned the firm into a global leader of the confectionery industry after taking over in 1957, is still the chairman.

Michele Ferrero, 85, is Italy's richest man according to the latest ranking by Forbes magazine, ahead of eyewear tycoon Leonardo Del Vecchio and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, a billionaire television mogul turned politician.
"Italy has lost a businessman who represented the best qualities of our economic history," Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said in a statement.

Frattini said Pietro Ferrero "brought an exceptionally important contribution to the Made in Italy brand around the world."
For her part, the president of the Italian employers federation Confindustria, Emma Marcegaglia, expressed her "deep sadness over the tragic and sudden death," describing Ferrero as "an entrepreneur of quality and one of the greatest representatives of Italian capitalism."

The Ferrero story began in the 1940s in Italy's northern Piedmont region.

A local pastry chef also called Pietro Ferrero began the business with a secret recipe that used nuts to cut down on the more expensive cocoa in a spread that was to be called Nutella and quickly became wildly popular.

The company also owns the Ferrero Rocher, Kinder and Tic-Tac brands.

It had a turnover of 6.6 billion euros ($9.4 billion) in its 2009-2010 financial year -- 4.3 percent higher than the previous year.

It has 18 plants around the world and employs more than 21,000 people.

The publicity-shy firm is entirely family-owned and has stayed away from big corporate takeovers or public listings. Last year, it did however signal interest in bidding for Britain's Cadbury, which was eventually taken over by Kraft Foods.
